Twitter closes its doors in response to election results

In a stunning development tech monster and cultural icon Twitter will close its doors at the end of the year. This announcement comes on the heels of a separate statement issued by Co-Founder and CEO Jack Dorsey where he personally apologized to the American people the role Twitter played in the past election.

“It is with a heavy heart that we have decided it is necessary to close the company doors and delete all trace of the social network online. We love our fans and users, we could not have done it without all of you. But it is time we take responsibility for our actions. Twitter was complicit in the highjacking of this past election and we cannot live with that or allow this to continue. We ask for your continued support and respect in this process,” said the newly hired, about to be laid-off, head of communications Kristin Binns in a statement on behalf of the company.

This is not the first time a private sector company has been directly affected by an election results, but it is certainly uncommon and unnerving for some Americans who look to the organization for stability.

“I know the internet is a crazy and confusing place, but Twitter has been my go to since I was 13,” said Alyson Halpert an avid Twitter user. “It’s going to be hard to gather news and dank memes all in one place anymore.”

Dorsey recognized the social network’s users in his apology, but asserts he cannot maintain the website if it has the potential to create as much confusion as it has thus far.

“I mean we tried to overlook it when blatant fake news was dispersed across the platform, but this past election was the last straw. I can’t in good conscience run this business, so I’m making a business and moral decision. Twitter is forever gone.”

Users have already begun to scout new sites and many tweets can be seen where users speculate how long it will take a Twitter-knock off to emerge. Twitter will officially close its doors on Dec. 31st, 2016.
